  • Pros

Optimization scan speeds malware scanning. Can scan in Safe Mode. Detected most threats. Good at keeping a clean system clean. Toolbar protects against malicious Web sites. Identity theft recovery.

  • Cons

Didn't clean up detected threats thoroughly. Didn't block installation of much scareware. Toolbar's antiphishing not effective.

  • Bottom Line

AVG believes everyone deserves free basic protection against Internet threats. The company's free antivirus offers that protection, and it's better than Microsoft's free product. Of course, the best for-pay anti-malware tools are even better, but not everyone can afford to pay.

Franklin D. Roosevelt's proposed second bill of rights declared that citizens deserve a living wage, an education, medical care, and more. He would surely agree with AVG's maxim: 'All computer users have the right to free basic protection against Internet threats.' AVG's latest offering, AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition 9.0 (free), works in Windows XP, Vista, or Windows 7 to protect against all sorts of malware and does it faster than ever.

New in this version an 'optimization scan' runs just after installation to identify known good programs. Future scans take less time as they can skip those programs. Ishq na karna mp3 download. A scan of my underpowered clean test system took 50 minutes before optimization, 18 minutes after. That's good, though similar technology in CA Internet Security Suite Plus 2010, ZoneAlarm Extreme Security 2010 and Kaspersky Internet Security 2010 brought the repeat scan time down to just a couple minutes.

The program hasn't changed visibly except for minor tweaks to its icons. Its simple user interface offers a quick overview of security component status and easy access to scanning and updating the product. Most users won't need to dig into the advanced settings dialog, which pulls together all configuration settings in a single tree-structured list. As always, it scans for malware on demand, on access, and on schedule.

Better at Detection than Removal
AVG Free grabs the latest malware definitions during the install process, so it's ready to work right away. The real-time Resident Shield caught at least one threat on each malware-infested test system. It did warn that cleanup might cause a system crash and, indeed, two systems crashed during cleanup; after a reboot they were fine.

Some systems needed multiple rounds of removal and rebooting just after install. A couple lost connectivity, but advice from AVG quickly solved that problem. When malware interfered with scanning two systems, I ran a command-line scan in Safe Mode. The only real hang-up was an installation problem that tech support eventually solved.

Like ZoneAlarm, AVG Free detected 89 percent of my malware samples, but AVG scored just 6.3 of 10 possible points because it didn't clean up thoroughly. AVG Free left behind executable files for about 40 percent of the threats and left over 80 percent of non-executable junk for another 40 percent. The free Microsoft Security Essentials 1.0, direct competition for AVG Free, scored 7.0 on this test. Spyware Doctor with AntiVirus 2010 holds the record in this test with 8.3 points.

When challenged with cleaning up commercial keyloggers, AVG Free scored 4.6 points, slightly above average. Microsoft bombed, scoring 1.6 points, while Norton Internet Security 2010 leads the pack with 7.5 points. As always, I give much less weight to the keylogger test.

Looking at rootkits from both the malware and keylogger collections, AVG Free detected just under 80 percent. Its score of 4.9 points is below average, but it did disable the rootkit technology from all the rootkits it detected. Microsoft Security Essentials scored 3.7 at rootkit removal.

3D Home Architect Deluxe is not distributed for free and is only available on commercial basis. Rogue security software or 'scareware' is a growing problem. AVG Free scored 5.2 for scareware removal, below average but above Microsoft's 4.5. Ad-Aware Pro 8.1 has the best score at removing scareware—8.8 points.—Next: Better Blocking

AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition 9.0

Bottom Line: AVG believes everyone deserves free basic protection against Internet threats. The company's free antivirus offers that protection, and it's better than Microsoft's free product. Of course, the best for-pay anti-malware tools are even better, but not everyone can afford to pay.
