Some systems needed multiple rounds of removal and rebooting just after install. A couple lost connectivity, but advice from AVG quickly solved that problem. When malware interfered with scanning two systems, I ran a command-line scan in Safe Mode. The only real hang-up was an installation problem that tech support eventually solved.
Like ZoneAlarm, AVG Free detected 89 percent of my malware samples, but AVG scored just 6.3 of 10 possible points because it didn't clean up thoroughly. AVG Free left behind executable files for about 40 percent of the threats and left over 80 percent of non-executable junk for another 40 percent. The free Microsoft Security Essentials 1.0, direct competition for AVG Free, scored 7.0 on this test. Spyware Doctor with AntiVirus 2010 holds the record in this test with 8.3 points.
When challenged with cleaning up commercial keyloggers, AVG Free scored 4.6 points, slightly above average. Microsoft bombed, scoring 1.6 points, while Norton Internet Security 2010 leads the pack with 7.5 points. As always, I give much less weight to the keylogger test.
Looking at rootkits from both the malware and keylogger collections, AVG Free detected just under 80 percent. Its score of 4.9 points is below average, but it did disable the rootkit technology from all the rootkits it detected. Microsoft Security Essentials scored 3.7 at rootkit removal.
